The Heroes Corner
The Chef’s Table Foundation takes this page on our website to highlight members of the U.S. Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives to protect the freedom and democracy of the United States. We share their stories in order to honor their service to our country.
Captain Stephan J. Bielaska was born in Ware, Massachusetts in 1918 and was killed in action during World War II on March 8, 1945. Captain Bielaska served in the 41st Tank Battalion under Gen. George Patton and was killed after his jeep hit a land mine in enemy territory in Oss, Germany. He is buried in the American military cemetery in Belgium, in the village of Henri Chapelle. Captain Bielaska was awarded the Purple Heart medal which is presented to veterans who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the United States military.
Captain Bielaska was survived by his wife Helen Bielaska and one daughter, Paula Bielaska Bergquist, who was born three months before his death. Paula serves on the board of The Chef's Table Foundation. She is a member of the American WWII Orphans Network, which is an organization for any son or daughter of a member of the Armed Forces or Merchant Marines who was killed, permanently listed as missing in action, or died in the line of duty or later died of wounds or injuries sustained during World War II.
CTF Partnerships Help Veterans
Chefs Table Foundation (CTF) partnered with Boston-based culinary school, the New England Center of Arts and Technology (NECAT), five years ago to help train CTF sponsored veterans in the culinary arts. CTF has also recently partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development to help identify additional qualified veteran candidates for the three-month NECAT program.
Upon successful graduation from NECAT, the candidates will receive an additional CTF paid three-month on-the-job training program. This training will utilize CTF’s company vehicle that will be a full mobile kitchen. The kitchen will be used for local catering and food events. When the total six-month training is completed, CTF will help graduates find full-time careers in the food service industry.
We are proud to be assisting veterans in accessing these new skills and career opportunities.
